Saint Peregrine was born in Forli, Italy in 1260. When the Pope’s Prior General, St. Philip Benizi, came to Forli to speak. Peregrine insulted him, and struck Philip. When Philip offered the other cheek, Peregrine was so overcome that he repented and converted to Catholicism. He joined an order of monks, the Servites, and spent the next fifty years dedicating himself to helping the sick and the poor. To atone for his previous bad conduct, Peregrine imposed a peculiar penance upon himself – he would stand whenever possible, rather than sit. This habit caused a bad case of varicose veins, and one of Peregrine’s legs became an open running sore that was diagnosed as cancer. The night before the surgeon was to cut off the diseased leg, Peregrine prayed before the crucifix for many hours. Peregrine believed he saw Christ come down from the crucifix and touch his leg. When Peregrine awoke the next morning, the leg was completely healed and the cancer gone. He died on May 1, 1345 and was canonized in 1726.

Alphonsus was elected Superior in 1743, and Pope Benedict XIV officially recognized the Congregation in 1749, he was appointed Bishop of Sant’ Agata dei Goti in 1762. Your goodness, O God, we humbly ask You, by the intercession of Your servant, Saint Lucy, that You would give perfect vision to our eyes, that they may serve for Your greater honor and glory, and for the salvation of our souls in this world, that we may come to the enjoyment of the unfailing light of the Lamb of God in paradise. Saint Lucy, virgin and martyr, hear our prayers and obtain our petitions. -Amen.

Saint Dymphna was the daughter of Damon, an Irish chieftain the 7th century. When she was 14, her mother died. This sudden tragedy drove Damon to insanity, and he decided to marry Dymphna. She refused, but could not convince her father to give up his sinful plan. With her confessor, St. Gerebernus, and two companions, Dymphna fled from Ireland to the continent of Europe, settling near Gheel, Belgium. They lived as hermits, and Dymphna quickly became known for her devotion to the poor. Damon and his warriors followed and finally found them, as reputation of her kindness spread through the countryside. The king’s soldiers killed the priest and her companions, but were afraid to kill Dymphna. Damon demanded one last time that she marry him. When Dymphna said no, he cut her head off with his sword around the year 650. A shrine was built on the spot where she was buried. Many miracles have taken place there, and an asylum for the mentally Ill was created nearby in the 13th century. It still exists today and helps patients live useful and normal lives in the homes of local residents.

Saint Lucy, also known as St. Lucia, was born into a wealthy Sicilian family in 283. Her name means “light” in Latin and is related to the word “lucid,” which means “radiant, clear and understandable.” When her mother became very ill, Lucy helped her make a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Agatha. Lucy and her mother prayed at the shrine for many hours before falling asleep. Suddenly, St. Agatha appeared to Lucy. She told Lucy her mother would be cured and that Lucy would someday become a martyr for her faith. The next morning, Lucy’s mother awoke completely cured. A few years later, a pagan man wanted to marry Lucy. She wanted to remain chaste and serve only God. The man was furious at her refusal and brought soldiers to kill her. When the soldiers tried to move her, they could not do so. They harnessed Lucy to bulls, but she could still not be moved. The soldiers covered her in oil and started a fire, but it did not burn her. Her eyes were torn out, but she still refused to abandon her faith. Finally, she was stabbed with a sword and died, as the vision of St. Agatha had predicted. Before Lucy died in 304, her sight was miraculously restored.
